During 2008 there was an oversupply of flash memory chips by the major manufacturers which resulted in there being a price crash, this forced the major manufacturers to start selling non QC tested flash wafers under different brand names in order to minimise losses, this is called downgraded flash. Be cautious when buying memory sticks as there are many makes and qualities of flash memory available.
